Cozumel lies in Quintana Roo State, situated in the southeasterly region of Mexico City. It's the areas largest island and sits about 16 km (10 miles) off the eastern coast of the Yucatán Peninsula. The Mayan relics, combined with miraculous nature and rich history, distinguish Cozumel as an authentic paradise filled with white sand and world-famous coral reefs.

Cozumel is a nature-loving municipality, particularly during the turtle-nesting season that begins in May. The local police, Armed Forces and City Works coordinate during this time to limit nighttime activity on the eastern side. Turtle egg-laying season is known as The Hawksbill.

Cozumel offers great economic accommodation alternatives, ranging from small hotels and homes to all else in between, including beachfront accommodation options. These properties boast gardens, barbecue facilities and swimming pools, with views of both the sea and Cozumel's ferry dock.

  • Feria de Cedral: Originally dating back over 150 years, this event commemorated the first catholic mass in Mexico and hosted in El Cedral. Held annually every first week of May, the event involves exhibitions, bullfighting, races and other events. The town of Cedral abounds with games, food stands, shopping and dancing throughout the week-long celebration.
  • 3 Kings Day: Held over the first week of January, the event combines several child-helping charitable organizations. This event is synonymous with eating Rosca de Reyes; it's a delicious coffee cake served this time of year, produced by local bakeries and baked with small babies inside. Whoever finds a baby in a slice of Rosca must host a party on 2 February that same year for everyone.
  • Carnaval: This event is usually held in February annually, though the exact dates change each year. While the Carnaval itself is a three-day party and features a parade for island residents, the events leading up to the Carnaval are sometimes more exciting. These events include concerts, pet contests, a ladies event, and an election event for the king and queen.
  • Bernardo Alonso Fishing Tournament: This is a sports and fishing tournament held annually in June.
  • San Pedro and San Pablo Festival: Held on the last weekend of June; this is a religious festival that offers a craft show, rides and a small fair.
  • Dia de la Independencia (Independence Day): Independence Day in Cozumel is celebrated with a downtown waterfront parade on 16 September. The day before, visitors and residents congregate around the town's City Hall and participate in a traditional Grito, a cry for independence. The Mayor hosts the event at 11 pm on the balcony of the City Hall's balcony while the locals cry out, "Viva la Mexico!"
