Located on the south eastern section of the Cap Bon, Hammamet is a popular resort city in the Governorate of Nabeul in Tunisia. With a base population of around 100,000, this number rises up to 400,000 during the summer.

Although only developed as a resort since 1920, no building in Hammamet is allowed to be taller than a tree, so unlike other Mediterranean seaside towns, it is a low-rise sprawl rather than a high-rise mass. It stretches along 20 kms of coastline and has a nice laid-back attitude.

Hammamet also has its own small zoo, Friguia Park which features tigers, crocodiles and other species, plus camel rides and a sea lion show.

Nearby historical attractions are Pupput which is the location of some remains of an ancient Roman settlement and Kerkouane, a fine example of Phoenician ruins. Nabeul, is a large town 10kms from Hammamet which makes for an interesting day trip, especially for the Friday market.

Some of the most recognisable dishes to seek out and try include kosksi which is the Tunisian version of traditional couscous, poisson complet which refers to a dish that is made from an entire fish, head to tail, and asida which is a sweet gruel pudding that is very popular.

Taking place in the Roman theatre in the gardens of George Sebastien’s villa, this is the most high profile international event in the region.
